Rhinestones on quartz stone

10 acres seemed like a wonderland to a child. Trumpet flowers, roses, purple daisies, peppermint, lilies, pampas grass, horrible bougainvillea that would scratch me and my favourite: Geraldton Wax.

I would crush the waxy flowers in between my fingers and inhale - they smelt like skin. The bushes would burst into flower in the middle of my favourite season, bright magenta against grey skies

Sweyns Lease was the street full of council houses given to gypsy families to get them into housing and out of the forest. My nanna lived in number 44 after spending her first 16 years in a vardo made from a train carriage.

Maureen was deeply interested in ancient Egypt. The house had many egyptian artifacts, souvenirs and artworks. She wore a silver head of Nefertiti on a necklace.

Maureen used to call them the ‘Death Lily’ and they sprung up all over our 10 acre property. Never were they allowed inside the house or car. I used to cut them and put them in coloured water so the white part would slowly become pale blue or pink. Only on the back patio though.
